Rental Cars

If you do your homework, renting a car does not have to be intimidating and confusing. In fact, you can save a lot of money if you are prepared and know the right questions to ask the rental car agent or what to look for in car rental online.

It is wise not to grab the very first rental car rate you locate. Rates on renting a car can vary greatly from agency to agency. You should shop around by contacting at least three or four agencies in the area in which you wish to rent the car to find the best possible rate. Don't allow any agent pressure you into renting a car until you have finished shopping.

What you intend to do with the car after renting may depend on the type of rental car contact you wish to enter into. Do you plan to use a lot of miles? If so, look for a deal with unlimited mileage. If you are renting a car for an extended period, ask about applicable discounts for long-term rental; many agencies offer deep discount, especially during off-season. Determine exactly how many free miles per day are available if you are not renting a car with unlimited mileage. Learn the rate per mile should you run over the allowable mileage.

Determine the size vehicle you need before planning on renting a car. Usually, rental car agencies group their vehicles in economy, intermediate or mid-size, and luxury and special categories such as convertibles, vans, or pick-up trucks. The economy rental car is usually going to be a very compact vehicle and get great gas mileage but probably will not be very comfortable for four people. Mid-size cars are commonly chosen by families or groups of four adults because they combine reasonably good gas mileage with enough room to hold four adults easily. Luxury cars are just what the category name implies: large, spacious, with lots of accessories and options but probably not so great on fuel mileage. Depending on your venue, a specialty car like a convertible may be worth the extra dollars, but you should expect to always pay more and during special seasons when these vehicles are especially popular for renting, you may need to reserve well in advance of your pick-up date.

When renting a car, you either must know that your own insurance will cover the car or you should purchase the insurance offered by the rental car agency. Whatever you do, never choose to take chances and go uninsured. Even if you are a very safe driver, it is possible for someone to hit you without it being your fault in any way.

When renting your car, read over the rental agreement to be certain you understand who is allowed to drive the vehicle. Usually only the person who presents their driver's license and credit card can drive the vehicle unless other arrangements are made and added into the contract. If you expect your spouse to also drive the car you are renting part of the time, be certain to establish this fact with the rental agency before signing the contact so you can be certain the contact will be valid and any purchased insurance will cover the rental car for both drivers. Even if you have to pay a little more to cover two drivers, it is not worth the risk not trying to save a dollar only to end up having to pay for damages should something happen to the car you are renting while it is in your possession.
